Since I grew up in Hawaii I never experienced daylight savings time until I moved to California in 1996. It didn’t make any sense to me. As far as I’m concerned the only way it has effected me is in April I lose one hour of sleep (Good thing it happens on a Sunday) and in October I get to sleep in an hour later (This is on a Sunday too, but I wish it was on a Monday when it would really count).
Another thing is that it fools me into thinking that the days are much longer in the Spring and Summer and much shorter in the Fall and Winter. When I first moved here I used to be soooo amused that it stayed lit until after 8pm during the summer. That never happened in Hawaii. On the other hand during the holiday season it is totally dark by 5pm wasting some premium time! Talk about messing with a person’s clock.
It doesn’t help matters that most of my family and friends are in Hawaii so half of the year there is a 2 hour time difference (which I love) and rest of the year there is a three hour time difference (which I don’t love). *warning: sarcasm follows* It is always a joy trying to remember which is which.
I just read on the California Energy Commission website (http://www.energy.ca.gov/daylightsaving.html ) that Beginning in 2007, Daylight Saving Time is extended one month and begins for most of the United States at:
2 a.m. on the Second Sunday in March
to
2 a.m. on the First Sunday of November.
Why? Why? Why?
What this means to me is that the 3 hour time difference will now be 9 months instead of six and the 2 hour time difference will last only three months!!!
Okay maybe I am just worrying about nothing because I plan to be home real soon and daylight savings will only be a distant memory. Except when I visit Las Vegas or California and then I have to remember which is which. Then the airline schedules will be messed up and I’ll lose vacation time, etc. Here we go again!!! *whew*
